| Israel's Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert | |||||||||||||||||
| For years opponents of Israel have been sheepishly throwing around the damning accusation that the Iraq War was launched on Israel's behalf. This ficticious and easily disprovable accusations has been countlessly repeated by a wide variety of individuals, from white supremecists, to Islamic extremists, to academics (like these two guys). Like every other issue involving Israel, the facts are not enough to make this damning accusation completely go away. Reguardless of what facts become available, there will always be people who will beleive any anti-Israel allegation. For example, there are still a good number of people that believe Israel was in some way involved in 9/11, despite all the evidence to the contrary. If these allegations are not discredited soon enough, a whole lot more people in the mainstream society will begin accepting the accusation as fact, and Israel will be sure to lose the much necessary support it needs from the American public, non-Jewish supporters of democracy and western culture, and just about anyone who cares about Israel's security and legitimacy. It is very important that with an accusation such as this, Israel and its supporters do what they can to limit ficticious information to avoid individuals in mainstream society believing the lies of the extremists. Now Israel's very own Prime Minister has done a huge favor to all of the enemies of that country. By defending the Iraq War and openly saying he supported it, Mr. Olmert has set Israel's cause way back, and has destroyed much of the hard work that the pro-Israel community has done to improve Israel's image and end the wacky conspiracy theories which often involve them. Shortly after a meeting with President Bush, Mr. Olmert told a group of reporters: "We in the Middle East have followed the American policy in Iraq for a long time, and we are very much impressed and encouraged by the stability which the great operation of America in Iraq brought to the Middle East." He added, "We pray and hope that this policy will be fully successful so that this stability which was created for all the moderate countries in the Middle East will continue." The Iraq War is a tragedy for this country. We have lost 3,000 brave men and women, which might be needed in case of a necessary war, and we have diminished our respect and image across the world. The Iraq war could arguably be the worst thing that could have ever happened to America. So to the millions of Americans that watch their tv sets in horror each day as news of more U.S. soliders being killed or injured, the worst thing any person could do is praise this horrible tragedy, and then claim that it is going well. This is especially true of the Prime Minister of a country like Israel. The sad part is Mr. Olmert continued digging Israel's grave during a visit to the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America. In a speech, Olmert said, "Iraq without Saddam Hussein is so much better for the security and safety of the State of Israel. Thank God for the courage, determination and leadership manifested by President George W. Bush in facing this challenge," No where in Olmert's speeches does he explain HOW Isreal is safer with Saddam gone. Most Americans currently view Israel as an ally. This may not be the case much longer if Israeli politicians continue to praise this American tragedy. Even before this war even began, it didn't take a Mossad intelligence team to figure out that removing secular Saddam Hussein would be a big favor to his arch rival Iran, or to the radical jihadists, who also wanted Saddam overthrown. Sure Saddam Hussein funded Palestinian terrorists, but so did (and still does) just about every other Islamic country. Since 1979, Iran has been calling for Israel's destruction, and some believe they are building nuclear weapons to follow through on their threat. Saddam Hussein, in 2003, was still a major rival of arch-enemy, Iran. As the war has taken course, this has proven even more true. Since the war, Iran has elected a harliner (Mahmoud Ahmadinejad), escalated tensions with the international community over its nuclear program, and stepped up its rhetoric to wipe Israel off the map. There is no way the Iranian regime would have had the guts to do any of this if its arch-rival, Saddam Hussein was still in power. It is arguable that the Iraq war emboldened Iran so much that they felt comfortable setting up their proxy, Hezbollah, to kidnapp 2 Israeli soldiers and start a month-long war which still leaves Hezbollah capable to attack Israel again. Not only did the Iraq war strengthen Iran and Hezbollah, but also the Islamic jihadists, which are currently attacking our troops in Iraq. The Jihadists have plans to "Islamicize" the world. The first item on their agenda is destroying the state of Israel. At this rate either the Iranians or the jihadists will be taking over Iraq. Either way it will be much more of a threat to Israel then if secular Saddam was left in power. There is no doubt that the war in Iraq has left both America and Israel much less safe. So in reality Olmert was praising an Israeli tragedy as well. An even more interesting aspect these comments is the ignorance and utter disillusionment Olmert seems to display. To say that the war has brought stability to that region makes me question Olmert's grip on reality. This war has brought that country to the brink of civil war and threatens to encourage fighting among Sunni and Shiite minorties of other countries and possibly the overthrow of their governments, replacing them with ones more hostile to the United States. This is bad for Israel as well. If this happens to a country like Egypt or Jordan, the first thing the new government will do is cut ties with Israel. We have already seen the effects of this war, which led to "elections" in Egypt and Lebanon, in which the fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood and terrorist group, Hezbollah, came to power. This war does not, and cannot, strengthen moderate governments in the region. As a patriotic American, I cannot have respect for anyone who supports the continuation of this awful, unwinable, and self-defeating war. I have lost all respect for Olmert, Bush, McCain, and anyone else who supports continuing this war. I cannot stand watching American soldiers die for an ungreatful population or to watch our image in the world sink any further. I call on all Israelis who care about their country's security, legitimacy, and image to denounce Olmert's ignorant comments. I call on the American government to demand an apology from Olmert or ban him from visiting the country. I call on all Jews to boycott Olmert and publicly declare their objections to these self-defeating actions which will continue to dig Israel's grave in the world of public opinion. (although I can't see the Jews doing this anytime soon). Olmert did David Duke, Alison Weir, Stephen Walt, John Mearsheimer, and a whole host of other enemies a great favor by justifying a damning accusation that will continue to bite them in the ass for years to come. |
