Supporting Israel Is Not Just A Jewish Cause
                                                      by Maurice Lavian                                     June 2008
I have been asked why I support Israel even though I'm an atheist non-neoconservative. Conventional wisdom states that Israel's supporters can be categorized into 3 groups: Jews, Evangelicals, and neoconservatives. The Jews support Israel because they consider it to be their homeland and when they witness anti-Israel activity they feel like its an attack on "their people". Evangelicals support Israel simply because the bible tells them to. They believe those who bless Israel will be blessed, and those who curse Israel will be cursed. The neoconservatives support Israel because they view them as a strong U.S. ally and as "our partner in crime". They believe Israel supports their agenda of policing the world, and therefore neoconservatives of all faiths are generally pro-Israel.

Now I dont fit into any of the 3 categories listed above, yet I support Israel. I'm not a Jew, I'm an atheist. I'm not a neoconservative, I am a libertarian. And I am DEFINITLY not an Evangelical. So if I dont believe in god or in a "chosen people" why do I support Israel?

Let me make my position on the Israeli/Palestinian conflict very clear. I am not a Zionist, and I do not support Zionist ideology. As an atheist I dont believe in a "chosen people" and I definitly dont believe in a god giving land to a chosen people. If i were around in the early 1900's while Zionism was becoming popular, I probably would be against the creation of a Jewish state. Even if I were around after world war 2, I still would not support the creation of Israel as an affirmative action. But since I am alive today and now I have a different view. I look at the Israeli/Palestinian conflict from a modern point of view with Israel being a close U.S. ally and a democracy fighting terror. For the same reason I have a positive view of Britain, France, and other U.S. allies, I have a positive view of Israel. No other U.S. ally is fighting terror and being illegitimized by so many rogues the way Israel is. Just watching the obvious double standard many in the world hold against this pro-U.S. democracy, while saying nothing about its terrorist enemies, outraged me and I created this site to spread the message.

I, off course, criticize Israel too. Like any country they have their flaws, and I do not hesitate to point these out in order to maintain a fair and balanced site. I oppose all settlement activity, I oppose Israel owning all of Jerusalem, and I oppose any Israeli who is not committed to a two-state solution. Sadly, I have been called an "anti-semite" for holding these views. But the vast majority of Jews do not use these smear tactics when someone criticizes Israel.

However, my support for Israel is not unconditional. If Israel became a Jewish theocracy or a dictatorship, they would lose 100% of my support. If they ever turn against the U.S., I will turn against them.  If they ever REALLY started ethnicly cleansing the Palestinians, they would lose my support. This is unlike other groups who support Israel. Evangelical support for Israel is unconditional since the bible says so. Even if Israel nuked the United States the Evangelicals would still support them out of religious delusion. Interestingly enough, the evangelicals support the Israeli people as much as al qaeda and Iran support the Palestinian people. The Jewish support for Israel is a little more reasonable. While many assume Jews will unconditionally support Israel, I believe their is a point where if Israel's behavior gets too out of line, the Jewish community in America will stand up against them since Israel would be doing the crimes in their name. Neoconservative support for Israel will last only as long as Israel continues to back the U.S. The first second that Israel is perceived to stop supporting America's role as the world's policemen, the neocons will turn against them too.

You dont have to belong to the 3 major groups to feel support for Israel in your heart. Just look around. Look at the facts. Listen to all sides. And most importantly to my American readers: STAY AS PATRIOTIC AMERICANS. Any American of any or no faith should be greatful to Israel for always backing up America. While we are free to criticize their actions, we should still regaurd them as a friend. And most importantly, we must support the only functioning democracy in the middle east. You dont have to be Jewish, Evangelical, or neoconservative to support Israel.
