Published: 4/24/2007

ANKARA - Turkey's FM Abdullah Gul stated on tuesday that the President had to be loyal to the principles of secularism, democracy and social state and said, "If I get elected I will act accordingly."

Holding a press conference at the parliament Gul said the public unequivocally knew that PM Erdogan chose not to run for president by his own will.

He reminded that he had just officially applied to the parliament as a formal candidate and said he believes his friends would support his candidacy.

"According to our constitution the President represents the Republic of Turkey and the Turkish Nation. This means the President must be loyal to the fundamental principles of the Republic, as stated in the constitution; to the principles of secularism, democracy, social state and rule of law; and represent the public.

If the MPs deem suitable myself for that post and vote for me, nobody should have any doubt, I will act according to the principles of our constitution," said Gul.

Gul said it was an honour but at the same time a very big responsibility to represent Turkish nation, adding that "nobody should have any doubt that I will act, being aware of this fact".

"It is our wish to elevate Turkey above the level of contemporary civilizations, as emphasized by great leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk," Gul said and noted that, "this can only be realized through democracy, rule of law, and a strong economy."

Gul also noted that he would meet the leaders of all political parties in the following days.
